Deanna Daughtry, the mother of murdered baby Messiah Daughtry, spoke out Monday about the police autopsy that released the results of the tot’s cause of death. Messiah was killed back in August.
Messiah died from lack of oxygen during delivery, according to the coroner’s finding.
Her father, Michael Cooksey, is charged with murder.
Shayne Smith, who is incarcerated in the Montgomery County Jail and accused of killing Messiah, has not been charged in the baby’s death. Police said the suspect is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history.
Deanna Daughtry said she believes her daughter’s death was caused by “excessive force” from Cooksey and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Messiah’s death has also been labeled a homicide.
“I want the truth out there,” Deanna Daughtry said, adding she doesn’t think her baby was ever in danger or needed to be. “I want that whole story to come out. … I don’t care if that horrible thing happens. The truth has to come out. … When the truth comes out, I have a path I will walk towards to try to make the situation better.”
She believes her son was traumatized and died at Cooksey’s hands.
“I don’t believe in God,” she said. “I don’t believe in the afterlife. I don’t believe in any of that. That’s the only thing I believe in, is that he was set up.”
She added Cooksey and his girlfriend both played a large role in her daughter’s death.
