‘It’ means, in Korean, “mess with me.”

“It” comes from a popular Korean phrase that means “whistle while you work.”

It’s yet another sign of success for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Hulu’s chilling look at life under theocratic rule in a totalitarian regime.

Set in a Northern American, dystopian future, “The Handmaid’s Tale” tells the harrowing tale of a group of women – mostly women – forced into servitude through breeding to produce couples for a wealthy people.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is based on Margaret Atwood’s classic book of the same name.

On Wednesday, Hulu says “The Handmaid’s Tale” became its most watched series worldwide, passing up the popular series “Naruto Shippuden” — which had been the most popular original title on the site for more than six months.

Each time the series has been added to the service — notably in India, Taiwan and South Korea — it has become one of the most watched shows in the world.

A vision of death and cruelty

First aired in 2016, the show now has episodes in 22 languages, and Hulu has two more seasons in the works.

Hulu’s new “The Handmaid’s Tale” data shows the series is still a smash hit even in highly-developed markets such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Indeed, the digital entertainment service has already announced a second season of the show.

Hulu is typically seen as a direct competitor to Netflix , but with the “Handmaid’s Tale” success, Hulu is showing the value of local content as it starts to expand internationally.

The success of “The Handmaid’s Tale” also shows Hulu is trying to compete with more established, better-established TV and movie studios, since the series is a licensed property and covers a range of issues and subject matter – like childbirth and sexual abuse.

It also means that shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale” will no longer be limited to the tried-and-true horror genre – and could pave the way for TV and movie studios to try their hands at original content as a way to provide broader appeal to viewers.

But for the time being, Hulu says the biggest reason for the series’ success is the gripping subject matter.

Hulu also credits star Elisabeth Moss, who has been named by Variety as one of the most powerful women in Hollywood.
