Renato Casaro – A Bemusement Featuring a Series of Film Posters

Renato Casaro is a fine artist whose work is on display this month at The Art Institute of Chicago. He was born in Sardinia in 1984, but raised in Italy, and is a citizen of Canada. His paintings depict narratives from film. “A film is essentially the long story, the author of that story,” he told The New York Times in 2017. “So there’s an attempt to tell that story through the medium of art.” In his series “Underworld,” the artist places posters of films into scenes, capturing the relationship between the scene and the poster. And in “Il diavolo,” he juxtaposes the publicity poster for the movie with a painting of an actual scene from the film.
