Pfizer lost nearly 100 products because they contained PFAS. Here’s what you need to know.

Pfizer left manufacturing of the following products several years ago.

Chemours’ spinoff from DuPont (now DuPont’s) admitted liability

Chemours pled guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in New York on Aug. 18, 2018. (Bernadette Singleton for The Washington Post)

Chemours said it knew of PFAS at its plant in Jackson, but no problems were found

DuPont has discovered evidence of PFOA in the Dan River, which flows into Lake Champlain. (Tricia Barzilay for The Washington Post)

Chemours said it had evidence of PFAS in its wastewater systems, but no problems were found.

Pfizer’s lost products include antimalarial medicines. (Simon C. Reynolds / EPA)

Why PFAS was once legally used

The chemical has been used by the military since the 1950s to make DU ammunition. (EPA)

How it’s used today

PFCs are used in many consumer products, such as packaging, paint, waterless dish soap, and laundry detergent. (A photo from PWC)

Learn the amount of PFAS in each household; some people’s exposures are much higher than others’. (Dr. Julie Logan Wannen, University of Southern Maine)

Learn more about the potential health impacts

Pfizer sells daparyl, dithionine, denayloamide, ditepherine, ditropan sulfate, tyloren sodium, lefluorexin and treprostinil. The Department of Veterans Affairs advises that non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), and Parkinson’s disease can be linked to PFAS exposure.

Since 2003, U.S. 1, the chemical used in the additive octavoethylmercury, has been removed from paint-cleaning agents.

While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that Americans use waterless dish soap, phosphate-free is easier and has fewer side effects. Detergent to replace the U.S. 1 known to be banned from all but one washing machine was found to contain PFAS chemicals including TSCO.

Manufacturers/arrangers and contractors who transport, source, or are responsible for waste PFAS

Pfizer launched a partnership in 2015 with HIAL, or the Hazardous Substance & Environmental Management Bureau of the University of New Hampshire School of Medicine. This cooperation is meant to provide recycling and waste management best practices, with a specific focus on PFAS and compounds other than PFOS and PFOA. (Pfizer)
