With two Premier League titles, 13 FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Cups already in his golden trophy cabinet, manager Louis van Gaal must be among the most well compensated in British football. After 14 years at the helm, Fernandes turned around Manchester United’s fortunes.
In 2008 Louis van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford with his reputation as a clean break from the sweet tooth of Sir Alex Ferguson, who transformed Manchester United from a team to be feared into a force for the ages. Van Gaal made his position clear, telling the Manchester Evening News : “If someone calls me ‘Louis van Gaal’ I don’t have to know anything about Manchester United. Of course I have a philosophy and a philosophy is superior to brains. Because there are brains and philosophy, and it is better if there is both.
“But I am ready to go right in between, which is what United is really, really good at. That’s how we have to become Manchester United again. This is the most magnificent club in the world.” Van Gaal also added in the same interview : “We are building something here which has to be prepared for the next 25 years,”
