NBA Players Association executive director Michele Roberts gave the players and their teams until Thursday to come to a resolution, and Lewis and James were suspended indefinitely.
LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart were both suspended indefinitely by the NBA following an on-court altercation at LeBron’s All-Star game fantasy camp on Saturday.
Tensions ran high and Lewis and James were involved in a scuffle in a game between NBA 2K18 and NBA 2K18 teams.
NFO Sports, which put on the event, said the meeting, held at the world’s first “connected sports facility” at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain, was a “natural conclusion to intense months of work” on a “truly collaborative” project.
Both James and Lewis issued apologies through the NBA Players Association.
After the game, Lewis spoke of “a painful moment” that was “intended as a playful moment” between he and James.
“My intention was to congratulate LeBron on his MVP award and since that has not happened, I will not make it up to him,” Lewis said.
“It’s unfortunate that it has come to this, but I am profoundly sorry that it did. I never meant to disrespect anyone or misrepresent myself to the public, and I want to personally apologise to LeBron, NBPA and all of the fans. I deeply regret the actions that I displayed and I wish LeBron nothing but the best moving forward.”
“As with any incident, I never liked seeing our teammates’ emotional exuberance taken to the extreme,” James said in a statement released through the NBA Players Association.
“This time, though, it crossed a line. One that I don’t think anyone should have to experience. While I don’t condone what Isaiah did, I do support him in the fact that this was an emotional moment on an extremely competitive basketball court.
“But tonight, it took on a meaning deeper than he originally intended. I also support the NBAPA’s decision to suspend him indefinitely. I can’t say enough how badly I want to see this ended.”
