Three-time ATP winner Daniil Medvedev hopes to represent Russia at the US Open as he moved into the world’s top-10 for the first time.

The 24-year-old, who has been ranked as high as 15, beat Croatian sixth seed Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (9-7) in the first round of the Los Angeles Open.

Medvedev, who also made the last 16 at the French Open this year, will leap 11 places to join compatriot Mikhail Youzhny in the top 10.

“I believe I deserve to play the biggest tournaments and first and foremost, the US Open,” said Medvedev.

“I have good memories of it and it’s a tournament I love to play.”

Nick Kyrgios ousted American ninth seed Jack Sock 6-4 7-6 (7-3) earlier on Monday.

Russian teenager Andrey Rublev beat Dominic Thiem 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the second round.
